Greetings from Aindhinai FPO there is a new arrival of a small herd of� animals� in our farm. The small herd of country breed of donkeys is the new addition to the other herds of traditional country breeds of goats and cows here. Four female donkeys called jennies and two males called jacks are in the herd.

Donkeys are animals that are capable of generating positive vibrations around the places in which they live. There is a traditional practice in many parts of India in which donkeys are kept as sign of good omen during auspicious occasions like house warming ceremonies etc.� Traditional belief has it that the presence of these cute animals� � around us gives a feel of divine vibrations.

The donkeys themselves are a wealth and are believed to bring good omen and luck to the owners. In fact there is no truth in the proverb “ If approached in front the� donkey would bite and kick if approached from behind”. Such a say must have been� born out of nothing but selfish interests to keep the luck and positive energy within one’s own family and to prevent others from enjoying� the countless benefits of owning a donkey.

These little animals offer enormous therapeutic benefits through almost all the wastes that they generate. Their excrement is a traditional cure for cold relief. And when the burnt donkey dung is smoked it gives relief from bronchitis and sinusitis. Researches show that donkey dung also contain antibacterial properties due to the heavy presence of herbal plants in their diet.

The donkey milk is even more nutritious than the goat milk� especially for babies. This extremely light milk� ensures very easy digestion. The milk is full of vitamins and minerals. The milk of donkey also is used to produce a number of cosmetic items. But despite all these the donkeys have become almost an endangered species with only around 5 lakh animals found. Around the globe the donkeys have become almost endangered due to slaughtering for meat.� That is the reason why we here have chosen donkeys to be part of Aindhinai.

It was very hard to buy donkeys and after a frantic search we could buy this herd of donkeys from Trinelveli, a place located down south of Tamil Nadu state. In fact when� they reached our campus a fortnight ago the poor animals looked very emaciated with a lot of wound scars in their bodies. The scars� indicate� the way these poor creatures were used as carriers of burden earlier.

Donkeys are good pets as well. Cost of rearing� donkeys is almost nil as they graze on all green patches on the ground. This apart, some water for quenching their thirst� will do. Every morning we take the donkeys for grazing that is a fulfilling feeling indeed. The donkeys emit a pleasant smell and we feel privileged to experience the same.

In European countries there are efforts to prevent the extinction of donkeys and mules. At Aindhinai we wanted to do our bit towards achieving that by breeding them here.
